Ask an Otternaut

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Space Otter Charlie? We have answers. Here are the most commonly asked questions we get about the game. Have a question we missed? Want to tell us an amazing fact about sea otters or space? Drop us a note!

+ What platforms? What langauges?

Space Otter Charlie is available for download on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Playstation, and Steam (Mac/PC) on March 18,2021. There is currently no Linux support, but we haven't completely ruled that out some time in the future. You can play Space Otter Charlie in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, or Japanese.

+ Is this a kids game? What's the target age?

The short answer: We made Space Otter Charlie for anyone. It's not a watered-down "kiddie" experience, nor is it a punishing "get-gud" precision platformer.

I think we get asked this a lot because the game is cute. Space Otter Charlie does feature really cute spacefaring sea otters because - well, sea otters ARE cute (that's a FACT)!

Just because the game looks cute doesn't mean it's a watered-down, just-for-kids kind of affair. On the younger side, it's challenging, but not incredibly so. We've played with kids as young as 8. There's no blood, but you do blast robots, ghosts, and weird blobby things with lasers.

On the older side, the game is challenging, but not punishing. Expect to die sometimes, but any persistent player should be able to finish it. Fans of platformers or 'vania-style games will should find something new in the zero-g mechanics. Same-screen multiplayer is frantic and has elicited explitives numerous times in the office.

+ Is there same-screen multiplayer?

The heart of Space Otter Charlie is a single player adventure; however, Space Otter Charlie does feature 2 competitive same-screen multiplayer game modes: So Urchin and Furry Fury. These modes feature fast-paced arena-style matches where otters in funny costumes jump and fly around one of 6 different arenas trying to blast each other and steal each otters' food.

+ Is there online multiplayer

There's no native online multiplayer support. On Steam, you can use Steam's "Remote Play Together" feature to play the same-screen multiplayer modes online with friends. We've tried it out and it works great!

+ Why no co-op?

When you're a tiny team (3 people) making an indie game, you have to keep things focused or you'll never ship. For us to do co-op as well as we wanted to, it would take a lot of careful design, development, and testing. We love multi-player co-op, but we just couldn't invest the time and money to make it as good as it needed to be.

+ Do I need a controller on PC/Mac?

We think that using a controller is the best way to play Space Otter Charlie, but we tried hard to make the keyboard/mouse controls feel great. Some of our Beta testers liked keyboard/mouse better than controller, so you decide! We do NOT recommend trying to play on a laptop trackpad. It's doable, but really not optimal.
